I think it's a problem when journalists have the title of their article before they do the interview, because it biases the way they conduct it.
My job is to file things! I'm not going to be like, "Mr. Jacobsen from Oakland, California" - just listing his problems, like a rap.
English is such a deliciously complex and undisciplined language, we can bend, fuse, distort words to all our purposes. We give old words new meanings, and we borrow new words from any language that intrudes into our intellectual environment.
People love dogs. You can never go wrong adding a dog to the story.
The way you treat others determines the way others treat you; the way others treat you determines the way you see yourself; the way you see yourself determines who you are.
It doesn't matter so much where the material comes from, as long as it's good.
There is absolutely no reason for being rushed along with the rush. Everybody should be free to go slow.
So, I mean, there's still vast swaths of the city that are suffering from a lack of jobs and poor housing and poor public schools, but they are building momentum - you know, techies, foodies, artists, musicians, all coming to Detroit. So there is this vibrancy. You see it in the newspapers every day - some story about the new Detroit.
But nothing is solid and permanent. Our lives are raised on the shakiest foundations. You don't need to read history books to know that. You only have to know the history of your own life.
I want us to continue to scale and grow over the coming years in education, professional development and employment to bring about change in people's lives.
